Part3;
A homeless man once told me that “music will save us all one day.”
The encounter beckoned when I snuck out of my Manhattan hotel room on
a Wesley College Honors trip in the middle of the night with a philosophy
major from Boston all because I thought she wanted to go to a club and
dance; we went to the Pearl Street Diner and ate. Definitely a waste of
time. Nonetheless, the bearded traveler playing Frank Sinatra pieces on his
acoustic traded us this little piece of advice for the unpleasant steak and
eggs I barely touched and the 47 cents accumulating at the bottom of her
purse. Music will save us all one day.
----------
Mike and I slowly walk through the dark room to an area where the moonlight
could be seen pouring through an open window. We hear a faint melodic hum that
turned out to be, as we got closer, a beautiful song coming from a female voice perched
in the corner of a deep closet. The repetition of the words and the melody danced in my
head and I kept moving toward the moonlit shadow in the corner before he grabbed me
by the arm to signal us to stop. I couldn’t make out her face (the stool she sat on was
turned away from us), but her voice was clear and I memorized every word;
Out of the true plain song they judged the melody;
Curious conveying hideth much harmony.
Therefore of the plain notes to set a sure ground
Maketh a modulation of most perfect sound.
In curiosity oftimes truth slippeth by
And in the plain true notes all the sweetness doth lie.
A glow radiated from the chest of every bird perched on the
window sill she leaned out of, and we stood for what felt like hours listening to the tune
that surrounded and encompassed us. The sound was as beautiful as I had ever heard
and the notes she sang permeated through the room. Then suddenly it all stopped.
She quickly snapped her head and noticed us listening quietly in the closet
doorway.
“My god…” was the only thing Mike managed to communicate. I was still
mesmerized before I realized that she had pushed past us and hastily started heading
downstairs. She hit the light of the hallway and for just a split second I caught her face.
This was the same girl who sat by herself on the couch earlier; almost as if she was
waiting on the song or the world to change, whichever came first.
Rule #6: Music will save us all one day.
